Jacob of Nisibis

Jacob of Nisibis
(fourth century)
   Theologian, Bishop and Saint.
Jacob was Bishop of Nisibis, but, apart from the fact that he took a leading part in the Council of Nicaea, little is known of his life. Traditionally he is thought to have been a hermit, to have suffered in the persecution of Maximus, to have befriended Ephraem Syrus, to have organised a week of public prayer against arius (which seems to have resulted in the heretic’s sudden death) and to have saved Nisibis from Persian invasion. To this day he is revered for his learning and sanctity, particularly in the Syriac and Armenian Churches.
